He was a very pleasant young man whose passion was to cook. He loved to cook for other clients and staff at the center. One could see the joy that he had when he saw people enjoying his meals. But all the while, one could see the pain that lay deep inside him. It was so obvious that something or someone was succeeding in putting out his fire. One day, I asked Michael to share with me what was really bothering him. He told me that he was not ready to talk about it. I asked him about his family. He said they would have nothing to do with him. I asked him why. He said he could not talk about it. My hope was that over a period of time, I could help him to feel comfortable enough to share with me what was really going on. I wanted to know the reason for his family’s utter rejection of him. In the meantime, we continued to talk about the goals he wanted to work on in order to move ahead in his life. After about a month of weekly sessions, he came to me out of the blue and said that he would not be returning. I asked him to sit down in the chair beside my desk and I could see the tears welling up in his eyes. He laid his forehead on the edge of my desk, and with his eyes facing the floor, he began to weep. I gently sought to get to the bottom of his pain that day. I asked why he decided not to return for counseling. He said, “I cannot tell you.” Early Monday morning, I received a call from the program director. He said that a female acquaintance of Michael’s had called to say that a tragedy had happened. Michael had come to her house to spend the weekend on her sofa. When she went out to greet him in the morning, he was unresponsive. He had apparently taken a large number of pills. The program director told me that he would try to track down a family member and get back to me. I do not recall how he managed to contact Michael’s brother, but he was successful in doing so. But what the program director told me when he called back a few hours later broke my heart. He said that when he informed Michael’s brother that Michael had died of an overdose, the brother responded, “Who cares? He was nothing but a f\*\*\*ing f\*gg\*t anyway!”\* Michael was gay, and that is why his family wanted nothing to do with him. This is what caused him so much emotional pain that he couldn’t bring himself to talk about it. He allowed ignorant people to put out his fire. ##### **One Single Word Can Change the Outcome — for Better or for Worse.** What finally led to this tragedy had finally come to light. Michael had experienced complete rejection from his family. He began to use drugs and alcohol in order to mitigate his pain. He had the courage to seek recovery from drug addiction at the counseling center where I worked part-time. And then what happened? I later learned that someone at the center said loudly as Michael was passing by, “I can smell a f\*gg\*t a mile away!” At the one place\* where he thought he might find the help he needed, longing for unconditional love and acceptance, one single person gave him the same hurtful treatment that he tried to escape from by leaving his home for the streets and resorting to drugs and alcohol. ##### **When God Allows You to See Something, *You* Must Let It Change *Your* Life.** That tragic event served to change *my* life forever. At that point, I looked up to Heaven and told the LORD, “Lord Jesus, as long as you give me breath, and fully relying on *Your* power, I promise that I will do everything in *my* power to keep this from ever happening again.” On that day, I made the solemn decision, as my dear friend, Patti, always says, *“TO BE PART OF THE SOLUTION, AND NOT PART OF THE PROBLEM.”* As long as God gives me breath, I will want to tell every person in the world with same-sex attraction that I meet, “Never let the ignorant extinguish your life. Never let them extinguish your light.” ##### **There’s Still Work to Do, Because It’s Still Happening!** Throughout the years, I have discovered that Michael was just one of thousands who ended their lives because of rejection due to their same-sex attraction—*something they did not choose*—for none of these dear souls would willingly *choose* to suffer so deeply, when all they would have to do is join the majority. Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.” (1 Corinthians 6:9-10, NKJV) **Let’s look at a *different* NON-translation of the same verse. It is actually not a translation at all, but a paraphrase:** “Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.” (1 Corinthians 6:9-10, NIV) In this verse, Paul uses two Greek words, μαλακός *malakos*, and ἀρσενοκοίτης *arsenokoitēs*, translated: - “homosexual” and “Sodomite” respectively in the New King James Version (NKJV); - “effeminate” and “homosexuals” respectively in the New American Standard Bible (NASB); and - “male prostitutes” and “Sodomites” respectively in the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) The English Standard Version does not even bother to translate these two (actually three) words individually. (More on that later.) ##### **The confusion is obvious.** Why did the NKJV translate μαλακός *malakos* as “homosexual,” but the NASB did not. Instead, it waited until the next compound word, ἀρσενοκοίτης *arsenokoitēs*, to randomly translate *it* as “homosexual.” Shouldn’t they be consistent? If a word means what it means, then there should not be these discrepant “judgment calls” (and that’s exactly what they are!) between versions. And what *about* this Greek word μαλακός *malakos* that Paul uses first? It literally means “soft.” Jesus used this word when He was asking about John the Baptist’s clothing: **“But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft \[μαλακός** ***malakos*\] garments? Indeed, those who wear soft \[μαλακός** ***malakos*\] clothing are in kings’ houses.” (Matthew 11:8; Luke 7:25)** In the Greek text, μαλακός *malakos*, (literally “soft”) is translated “homosexual” in several modern English translations. The combination of two Greek words: ἄρσην *arsēn*, which literally means “male” or “man,” and κοίτη *koitē*, (which literally means “couch” or “bed”), is translated “homosexual” or “Sodomite,” depending on the version. The actual compound term “homosexual” derives from two words. One is of Greek origin, and the other of Latin. “Homo-” (Greek *homos*) means “same,”, and “sexual,” is derived from Latin, *sexus*. So the term homosexual literally means, “same sex.” How can the word “homosexual” be accurately used in the Bible when there is not even a literal Greek word for “sex” or “sexual” in it?! There is absolutely no equivalent to the term “homosexual” in these compound Greek/Latin to English word. It is, therefore, COMPLETELY UNJUSTIFIED to translate them as such! ##### **What about the words “sex” and “sexual” used in other verses in a modern Bible translation?** Every time the word “sexual” is found in English translations, it has been interpolated into the text by the editors/translators. It derives from the Greek word πορνεία *porneia*, (where we get the word pornography). It is most often translated in older translations,“fornication” or in modern translations,“sexual immorality.” Yes, it is true that everywhere we see the Greek word πορνεία in the text, there is an association with “sexual” activity. But in virtually every case, this sexual activity is associated with *idolatry* and *adultery*. **Let’s look at them.** “But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality \[πορνεία *porneia*\] causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery.” (Matthew 5:32, NKJV) “And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery.” (Matthew 19:9, NKJV) Jesus repeated this in two different conversations in the same gospel! And yet, how many self-righteous men who aggressively condemn gay people are guilty of breaking the rule that Jesus Himself set forth above? They condemn people in same-sex relationships to Hell, while they themselves are living in what Jesus considered adultery! Later in the Book of Acts, when the self-righteous Pharisees were condemning converts for not keeping the Old Testament Law of Moses, Peter uses this word πορνεία porneia, translated “sexual immorality,” where every other word surrounding it refers to idol worship and pagan religious practices: *“Therefore I judge that we should not trouble those from among the Gentiles who are turning to God, 20 but that we write to them to abstain from things polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from things strangled, and from blood.”* (Acts 15:19-20 NKJV) ##### **Let’s confer also with Acts 15:29; 21:25.** *“It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and such sexual immorality as is not even named among the Gentiles—that a man has his father’s wife!”* (1 Corinthians 5:1 NKJV) This egregious act would also be considered adultery. The woman who is the father’s wife would be engaging in an adulterous act. *“Foods for the stomach and the stomach for foods, but God will destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.”* (1 Corinthians 6:13, NKJV) ##### **Paul is talking about IDOLATRY.** Anything meant “for the Lord,” but is *given* to something else instead of the Lord, entails idolatry. It (in this case, the human body) is *given* to that other thing, instead of to the Lord. “Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot? Certainly not! Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? For “the two,” He says, “shall become one flesh.” But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him. Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s. (1 Corinthians 6:15-20, NKJV) In the Bible as a whole, there is a direct association between “harlotry” and idol worship. In both Testaments, to “play the harlot” (E.g. Jeremiah 3:1, et al) meant to engage in idol worship. “Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit…you were bought with a price” means your body belongs to God. It should not be given to any other god, in a sexual way or otherwise. ##### **So who were these “soft-man-couches” Paul is talking about?** Paul’s Greek: *arseno-koitae* (“man-bed”) is NOT used by anyone else in extant literature. Here is a perfect example of English Bible translators’ interpolation in order to complete their own prejudiced thought – an interpolation based on inductive reasoning. The word “Sodomite” can simply mean “one who comes from Sodom,” just as an Israelite is one who comes from Israel, or a “Hittite” (popular people in the O.T.) is from Hatti, (modern-day Anatolia). “Sodomite,” therefore, is pure interpolation because it has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE GREEK WORD THAT PAUL USED. Now, in order to meet modern understanding, English translators use the entirely unjustifiable word “homosexual” instead of Sodomite, because modern readers are no longer familiar with Sodom (especially those who have no familiarity with the Bible.) ##### **Conclusion** The best way to think of the compound words “*malakos-arseno-koite*” (literally “soft”-“man”-“bed”) in 1 Corinthians 6:9 is that, Paul was referring to “male prostitutes” – ones who engaged in male temple cult prostitution in the Pagan religions that surrounded the Jews in ancient Israel and in 1st Century Rome and Corinth. At least the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) gets it half right. “Sodomite” is an interpolation, but “male prostitute” is much more appropriate ***guess*** at what ἀρσενοκοίτης *arsenokoitēs* actually referred to. Why do we say it’s a “guess?” Because that is what each and every modern English translation and paraphrase is doing. They are guessing. Why? Because they have no idea of what ἀρσενοκοίτης literally meant. To be academically honest, the most accurate concept that can be extrapolated from 1 Corinthians 6:9 was that men were doing something on a sofa, couch, or bed within the context of idol worship. When Paul says, “Fornicators, idolaters, adulterers, male prostitutes, sodomites, thieves, the greedy, drunkards, revilers, robbers—none of these will inherit the kingdom of God” (1 Corinthians 6:9-10, NRSV), he means, none who *continu*e *unrepentantly* to practice these things to the detriment of themselves or others. He means that people – both men and women — who have no intention of walking away from such a debauched lifestyle will inherit the Kingdom of God. Paul was NOT referring to people with innate same-sex attraction. He was NOT referring to two males in a loving, caring relationship — who build a home together, who have a joint bank account, two dogs, and a picket fence in their front yard! ##### **Come back to Jesus. But I didn’t want to come on too strong, lest he think I had ulterior motives. I just smiled and said, “That’s a great T-shirt!” Looking back, I wish I’d been a little more courageous. I should have asked, “Does that mean you’ve been able to separate Jesus from the un-Christ-like attitudes and behaviors of some people who *say* they are his followers, but don’t show His lovingkindness?” It is a fact that Jesus Himself had a problem with His followers “getting Him.” They failed to understand His love and compassion for souls, especially those considered to be outcasts. Jesus was well aware that His disciples sometimes had a problem “getting Him.” ##### **Examples of Jesus’ Followers Failing to “Get Him.”** > **Matthew 15:21-23 (NKJV):** Then Jesus went out from there and departed to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried out to Him, saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed.” But He answered her not a word. And His disciples came and urged Him, saying, “Send her away, for she cries out after us.” > **Matthew 15:28 (NKJV):** “Then Jesus answered and said to her, ‘O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.'” Thank God Jesus was standing right there physically to speak with her personally. Yes, He did use it as a teaching moment to test her faith in the few verses that followed. But ultimately, He congratulated her for being assertive with her bold faith in Him to heal her daughter! The saddest thing about this event, however, is that Jesus’ followers said these unkind words RIGHT IN FRONT OF HER. If she weren’t as strong a woman as she was, can you imagine how that might have made her feel? She comes to Jesus desperate for the healing of her daughter and she hears His disciples complaining about her bothering them and demanding that Jesus essentially tell her, “Get lost!” Her boldness paid off, though! She simply ignored the lack of mercy and grace in His disciples and got just what she needed from the Lord! This woman had a need, and regardless of others’ ignorance, she had the faith to believe that Jesus Christ could – and *would*– supply it. If you have been mistreated by some of Jesus’ followers, I hope you will do the same as this courageous, unrelenting woman. Ignore them and push your way to Jesus! ##### **Another Example of Jesus’ Followers Fouling Up and Jesus’ Having to Call Them On It:** **Matthew 26:6-10 (NKJV):** And when Jesus was in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, a woman came to Him having an alabaster flask of very costly fragrant oil, and she poured it on His head as He sat at the table. **But when His disciples saw it**, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste? For this fragrant oil might have been sold for much and given to the poor.” **But when Jesus was aware of it**, He said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a good work for Me.” Two verses in the preceding passage begin with a “but.” In verse 8, Jesus’ followers had a negative “But.” So do many of His followers today! They *say* they solemnly believe the promise in John 3:16 where it says, WHOSOEVER believes in Him shall not perish but have have eternal life. But then, because they are self-appointed gatekeepers of the Kingdom of Heaven, they carry signs negating the promise of John 3:16. They use the Apostle Paul’s list of sins that kept God-hating people out of the Kingdom (Romans 1:30, NKJV). Thank God for the next positive “but” in verse 10: “*But when Jesus* was aware of it, He said to them, ‘Why do you trouble the woman…’” Once again, thank God Jesus was there physically to intervene. He rebuked His followers, asking why they troubled her. ##### **Another Example** Mark 6:34-37 (NKJV) And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd. So He began to teach them many things. When the day was now far spent, His disciples came to Him and said, “This is a deserted place, and already the hour is late. Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy themselves bread; for they have nothing to eat.” But He answered and said to them, “You give them something to eat.” (The New American Standard Bible correctly translates Jesus’ words in the imperative mood of the original Greek New Testament: “*You* give them something to eat!”) What makes the situation different today is that, unlike the scenarios we just witnessed from God’s Word, Jesus is not physically present to directly intervene when His followers say or do stupid things to exclude or hurt people who are willing to come to Him. And yet, He is present by His Spirit. Many people with same-sex attraction know this to be true. Are you wiling to separate Jesus from the unChrist-like attitudes and behaviors of His ignorant – even if well-meaning – followers? ##### They Will Answer to God Multitudes of people with same-sex attraction have left the church because of the exclusionary attitudes and behaviors of Jesus’ followers. But would we do that if we had bad experiences in some restaurants? Would we stop going to restaurants for the rest of our lives? A church where God’s people come together to worship the Lord, encourage, and uplift each other is much like a restaurant. It’s a place to get spiritually fed. Just as you wouldn’t stop going to restaurants because of a bad experience, you shouldn’t stop going to church. There *are* good, loving, caring, Jesus Christ-centered spiritual “restaurants” out there! We all need to be like the woman of Canaan (Matthew 15:21-23, NKJV). She was determined, and *nobody* was going to stand between her and the LORD. She did not allow the ignorance of Jesus’ followers to deter her from receiving the blessing of Jesus’ invitation: John 6:37 (NKJV) The one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out. Jesus saved her from His followers! He can save you from his ignorant followers also. The word “homosexual” in modern English versions of the New Testament is an entirely unjustified, far-from-literal translation. It is nothing more than an interpolated, erroneous paraphrase. **Calling it the blanket term — “fornication” — doesn’t work either.** The word “fornication” (N.T. Greek πορνεία) is one the most misunderstood and misconceived concepts in the Bible. This is because these verses *appear* to be so cut and dried. There seems to be no way to reinterpret them without being accused of “twisting the Scriptures to suit your sin,” as judgmental readers of the Bible are wont to do. But you don’t have to be afraid! Knowledge is power. Before we delve into these intimidating passages, it is imperative that we brush up on the rules of accurate Bible interpretation. After that, *we* won’t have to attempt to reinterpret these verses! We’ll just let the Bible do it for us! We’ve made this clear elsewhere: Allow the Bible to interpret the Bible. Interpret it accurately by paying *strict* attention to this fact: **The Historical Timeline of the Holy Bible Represents God’s Interaction with Particular People, at Particular Times, in Particular Places, for Particular Purposes.** Judgmental Bible readers believe this to be true, whether they are honest enough to admit it or not. I don’t know one Bible-quoting, gay-condemning fundamentalist who doesn’t live by this fact. Every single one of them have disobeyed the verses they quote. That’s why they like to quote the familiar 90s bumper-sticker, “Christians aren’t perfect, just forgiven.” How convenient! ##### **We Must Accurately Interpret the Holy Bible On This One Single Premise:** **The *only* immutable Truth in Scripture is that Jesus Christ is LORD. He is the destination. Everything else contained therein is the roadmap – a roadmap in which all roads lead to Him. Jesus IS the eternal Word of God (John 1:1). He is the common thread that is woven throughout the entire Bible, from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21. He is the final “AMEN” (Revelation 3:14)** That said, one of my favorite pastors used to say, “We can’t change the Message, but the *method* may have to change.” While the *message* of the gospel of Jesus Christ is eternally immutable, the *methods* that God has used to bring people to Himself are constantly changing in Scripture. For instance, in Exodus chapter 20, God instructed Moses to build only a crude, earthen altar of stones. He forbade him and his laborers to even touch the altar with a human-made tool. > Exodus 20:24-25 (NKJV) > *24 “An altar of earth you shall make for Me, and you shall sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen. In every place where I record My name, I will come to you, and I will bless you. 25 And if you make Me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of hewn stone; for if you use your tool on it, you have profaned it.”* But by the time we get to the 27th chapter of the same book, God instructs Moses to build the altar of acacia wood and overlay it with bronze (Exodus 27:1-2). Lo and behold, when we get to the 39th chapter of the same book, God makes reference to the “gold altar”! (Exodus 39:38; also 40:26) Did you notice? The first altar must not be touched by any tool. It was to be made of stones and if anyone dare touch it with a tool, it would be “*profaned*!” *“For if you use your tool on it, you have profaned it”* (Exodus 20:25b). But in just a few chapters, the LORD instructed that the altar should be made of acacia wood, and overlaid with bronze. In addition, this altar would have to be manufactured to exact dimensions! (Exodus 27:1) Thus, it would be *impossible* to obey God *unless* man-made tools were used! ##### **God is Not Bound by His Previous Methods! What *was* Profane, No Longer Is!** As another germane example, the 11th chapter of Leviticus lays out the dietary laws that were expected to be strictly kept. - All animals with “cloven hoofs” (pigs, camels, etc.) were forbidden as being “unclean” (Leviticus 11:4). - All animals that did not “chew the cud” (regurgitate partially digested food and chew it a second time for better digestion) were forbidden as being “unclean” (Leviticus 11:7). - All types of seafood were forbidden except those which had “fins and scales.” Any sea creature that did not have fins and scales was “an abomination” (Hebrew: שֶׁקֶץ šeqeṣ; Leviticus 11:10-12). The chapter goes on to list other “abominations” that you can read for yourself. **Now, Take Careful Note!** While in the Old Testament, pork and shrimp were “unclean” “abominations,” in the New Testament, *God* *Himself* told St. Peter they are now “clean!” (Acts 10:15; 11:9) Ah-oh! The point is this (and it’s one that gay-bashing Bible quoters are *not* going to like to hear!): Without one bit of compromise in faithfulness to the Word of God, we are not bound by *any* of the edicts, aka “holiness codes,” found in Leviticus and Deuteronomy for salvation. ##### **We’ll Let the Apostles Make the Argument for Us!** We’ve already heard how the LORD changed the Apostle Peter’s way of thinking with regard to the dietary mandates in Leviticus, so, now let’s hear more of how God changed the Apostle Paul’s view on the entire Old Testament Law: > Galatians 3:1-2 (NKJV) > *1 “O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed among you as crucified? 2 This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?”* > Galatians 3:10 (NKJV) > 10 *“For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, “Cursed is everyone **who does not continue in ALL things** which are written in the book of the law, to do them.”* (Cf. Deuteronomy 27:26) The Apostle Paul, a Pharisee of Pharisees, enforced the holiness codes and ceremonial laws in the Old Testament with such zeal that he would have people imprisoned and put to death for not complying. ##### **Knocked Off His Horse, Paul Changed His Thinking** After the LORD Jesus knocked him off his horse on the way to Damascus (Acts 9:1ff), his theology was so radically changed that he spent the rest of his life undoing the damage he had done to human souls when he insisted on forcefully and violently enforcing edicts that were based on his Old Testament way of thinking – and NOT ON GRACE ALONE THROUGH FAITH (Cf. Ephesians 2:8-9). ##### **The Apostle James is Even More Specific:** > James 2:8-13 (NKJV) *8 “If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you do well; 9 but if you show partiality, you commit sin, and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all. 11 For He who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” Now if you do not commit adultery, but you do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. 12 So speak and so do as those who will be judged by the law of liberty. 13 For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.”* ##### **Judgmental Christian, Take Heed: Mercy Triumphs Over Judgment.** James says that when you pick and choose which part of the Old Testament Law does or does not apply to yourself, all the while picking and choosing which part applies to another person, you are showing “partiality,” and “you commit sin” (v. 9) James also says that if one thinks he is keeping the whole law, but “stumbles in one point, he is “guilty of all” (2:10). ##### **Law is Law, Grace is Grace. And Never the Twain Shall Be the Same.** Both Paul and James have told us that “the Law is the Law is the Law.” If you break one single point of it, you’ve broken the whole thing! Both of these apostles have made it utterly clear that, if we are going to judge people according to Old Testament edicts such as the ones in the book of Leviticus, then we must make sure that we ourselves are complying with every single one of them. And yet, sign-carrying, bullhorn-toting, Bible verse-shouting, modern-day Pharisees do this continually! They scream Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13 to condemn gay people, while ignoring 99.9% of the rest of the edicts in Leviticus and Deuteronomy. 1. *Thankfully*, they do not put their children to death for cursing or sassing them (Leviticus 20:9; Deuteronomy 21:18-21). 2. *Thankfully*, they do not put church members to death who have committed adultery (Leviticus 20:10) (And there have been many of them!) 3. *Thankfully*, they do not have a daughter stoned for lying about her virginity to her fiancé (Deuteronomy 22:13-21). 4. *Thankfully*, they do not leave their wives for a night to have sex with their widowed sisters-in law, so that their deceased brothers would have a son to his name – called “the brother-in-law’s duty” (Deuteronomy 25:5-10). God required this! He killed Onan for refusing to impregnate his deceased brother’s wife! (Genesis 38:8-10) ##### **It’s All or None for Salvation** There are myriad commands, rules, and edicts contained in the books of Leviticus and Deuteronomy that are punishable by ostracization at best, and death at worst. Modern-day Pharisees who use these two verses as their authority to condemn gay people comply with none of them. How dare they use these two verses buried among them as a license to condemn an eternal soul to Hell?! Now, as we have said, we could stop right here and we will have proven that the two scary verses in Leviticus chapters 18 and 20 are untenable as proof that God will not allow people in loving, caring same-sex relationships into His kingdom today. (That may appear to be the case in [Romans chapter 1](https://grace4gays.com/romans-1-debunked/), but we will see that that judgment, taken out of context, is also false.) Yes, we could stop right here. But in the interest of academic excellence, we will now move from the general to the particular in order to debunk this egregious theology. ##### **Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13 Expounded** We must always begin with academic honesty. In the verses that say “abomination” (“detestable” in some versions) with regard to dietary laws and the verses that say “abomination” with regard to sexual practices, the Hebrew words translated “abomination” are different. 1. The Hebrew word most often translated “abomination” with regard to “unclean” food in dietary restrictions is שֶׁקֶץ *šeqeṣ*. 2. The Hebrew word translated “abomination” with regard to unclean flesh used in animal sacrifices is פִּגּוּל *p̱iggûl*; or פִּגֻּל *piggul.* 3. The Hebrew word translated “abomination” with regard to certain acts, including sexual acts, (and including mixed marriages outside the faith!), is תּוֹעֵבָה *tô‘êḇâ*; or תֹּעֵבָה *tonebah*. So, we will focus on the Hebrew word תּוֹעֵבָה *tô‘êḇâ*, translated into English as “abomination” (NIV: “detestable”; NJPS *Tenakh*: “abhorrence”). Strongs Bible Dictionary defines *tô‘êḇâ* as, “a disgusting thing, abomination, abominable; in ritual sense (of unclean food, idols, mixed marriages); in ethical sense (of wickedness etc.)” Notice that Strongs says *tô‘êḇâ* CAN refer to unclean food also! This little detail is important! Genesis 43:32 tells us that simply eating dinner with the Hebrews was *tô‘êḇâ,* “an abomination” to the Egyptians. So, according to the Biblical use of the word *tô‘êḇâ* in Leviticus, a man lying with another man was tantamount to eating dinner with an ethic group not your own! And what else was *tô‘êḇâ* “abomination” to the Egyptians? **Shepherds Could be *tô‘êḇâ*, an Abomination! (Genesis 46:34).** So, the idea of Jesus Christ being “the Great Shepherd” would be *tô’êḇâ*, an abomination, to the Egyptians. And do you know what else God calls תּוֹעֵבָה *tô‘êḇâ*, an “abomination” in the Old Testament? **Insence Could Be *tô‘êḇâ*, an Abomination!** Isaiah 1:13a (NKJV) 13 “Bring no more futile sacrifices; Incense is an abomination to Me.” Yet, in Exodus 30:1ff, God instructs Aaron the priest to perpetually burn incense. In Exodus 30:7, God calls it “sweet incense.” So, in the eyes of God, incense can be “sweet,” and incense can be *tô‘êḇâ*, an “abomination.” And do you know what else was *tô‘êḇâ*, an abomination in Israel at that time? **Charging Interest on Loans Was *tô‘êḇâ*, an Abomination!** > Ezekiel 18:13 (NKJV) *13 “If he has exacted usury Or taken increase—Shall he then live? He shall not live! If he has done any of these abominations, He shall surely die; His blood shall be upon him.”* Not only was charging interest *tô‘êḇâ*, an “abomination,” it was a crime punishable by death! If a person who quotes Leviticus 18:22 and Leviticus 20:13 to condemn gay people to eternal Hell were to become a bank president, should he condemn the founder or the board of directors of that bank to eternal Hell because they charge interest on loans? According to their logic with regard to people in loving, caring same-sex relationships, the answer is a resounding YES. Therefore, we must conclude that just because Scripture uses the word *tô‘êḇâ* to describe a man lying with another man, we cannot conclude that what is *tô‘êḇâ* is necessarily evil today. Charging interest can be an abomination to the LORD, and charging interest can be acceptable to the LORD. **Of the Leviticus Passages, You Don’t Have to be Afraid!** Just as incense be *tô‘êḇâ*, an “abomination” to the LORD, incense can be sweet to the LORD. A man lying with a man can be an abomination to the LORD, and two men lying next to each other in a loving, caring relationship can be sweet to the LORD. One is free to draw his own conclusions, but you cannot have it both ways. You CANNOT us *tô‘êḇâ* “abomination,” as found in Leviticus 18:22; Leviticus 20:13; and Isaiah 1:13, to condemn gay people. The use of this word in Scripture is *relative*. **As Columbo Would Say, “Ah, sir…one more thing.”** In virtually every use of the word *tô‘êḇâ* “abomination” in the Old Testament, it is related to idol worship. The same is true of the seeming, but erroneous, reference to same-sex attraction in the New Testament, especially Romans chapter one. There, it is definitely related to idol worship. **So, what are we to make of Leviticus 18:22 and Leviticus 20:13?** Why does it say, “You shall not lie with a man as with a woman. It is *tô‘êḇâ*, an abomination?” For the same reason that, at that time, engaging in a mixed marriage was *tô‘êḇâ*, an “abomination.” > Ezra 9:1-2 (NKJV) *“When these things were done, the leaders came to me, saying, “The people of Israel and the priests and the Levites have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands, with respect to the abominations of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites. For they have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and their sons, so that the holy seed is mixed with the peoples of those lands. Indeed, the hand of the leaders and rulers has been foremost in this trespass.”* At that time, for an Israelite man to take a foreigner as wife, it was *tô‘êḇâ*, an abomination. Do you know any self-righteous people who married outside his race, ethnicity, or religious background? I sure do! ##### **There is a Bottom Line to All This.** God told Moses to write these verses in order to separate the Israelites from the pagan cultures that surrounded them. Every one of these edicts at the time of their institution was right and good. 1. Food laws had to be instituted in order to keep the people healthy in the desert, and to prevent them from eating food offered to idols – something that was deemed *tô‘êḇâ*, an “abomination” for a good reason. 2. The forbidding of intermarriage had to be instituted at that time in order to keep God’s people from mixing with pagan nations and following after the false gods of their spouses – something that was deemed *tô‘êḇâ*, an “abomination,” for a good reason. 3. The forbidding of men having sexual relations with other men had to be instituted in order to assure that the population of the Israelites would keep increasing in the midst of their being a very small minority surrounded by very hostile enemies who worshiped false gods. In light of this, there was also the need to have sons who would be soldiers to protect the nation against opposing armies. The Israelites were always (and still are) being attacked by surrounding nations. They needed to “be fruitful and multiply” if they were to survive at all. 4. Pagan nations engaged in licentious sexual acts on pagan altars as religious rituals — men and women, men and men, women and women. The two verses in question – Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13 – have NO connection whatsoever to same-sex *relationships*. They had to do with the licentious sexual debauchery. For further discussion, see our examination of Sodom & Gomorrah. **It is Dead Wrong to Condemn People in Loving, Caring Same-Sex Relationships Based on Leviticus.** ##### **The Levitical System Was Necessary for a Particular Purpose in Time. It Is Now Abolished.** The rigidness of the Levitical system was necessary *temporarily* in order to preserve the nascent faith called Judaism. Paganism surrounded this new community. The same Old Testament books that are criticized for being “barbaric” are the same books that forbade human sacrifice of their babies to appease nature and the gods. God called His people to “come out from among them” (2 Corinthians 6:16-18). He wanted them to be free from the bondage and captivity of the paganism that surrounded them. There are many beautiful things in the book of Leviticus to learn from. However, you don’t have to read past the first chapter to realize that God works with His people in progressing dispensations. God instituted the admittedly harsh Levitical system without any intention of keeping it in force. He knew that His Son, Jesus Christ would eventually appear, and that Jesus would usher in the dispensation of Grace! And God’s excellent grace is for whosoever believes in Him (John 3:16). Are gays included in the “whosoever” category? The people who use it against people with same-sex attraction use it simply because it makes a passing reference to Sodom and Gomorrah. In their ignorant minds, if it even *mentions* Sodom and Gomorrah, then it *must* have to do with gay people! How inane is such thinking! While not often used, ironically, it is a most helpful passage to debunk the false interpretation of it and all other “clobber passages!” ##### **The Passage** > 7 *“But I want to remind you, though you once knew this, that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day; as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.* > 8 “*Likewise also these dreamers defile the flesh, reject authority, and speak evil of dignitaries.”* (Jude 1:5-8, NKJV) ##### **This is *the* Key “Sodom & Gomorrah” Passage to Debunk All Other False Interpretations!** In this passage, we see the following facts: 1. The Lord first saved the people who came out of the land of Egypt. (They once knew God. Cf. Romans 1:21 and [the expounding on it](https://grace4gays.com/romans-1-if-ever-there-was-a-chapter-taken-out-of-context/).) 2. But then, whom did the Lord later destroy? “Those who did not believe.” 3. Who else did the Lord condemn? *“The angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode.”*(Cf. Genesis 6; 2 Peter 2:4-10) 4. Were Sodom & Gomorrah the only cities? No. Jude describes *“Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them…”* 5. What did Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them, give *themselves* over to and what did they do to act upon it? They “gave themselves over to \*sexual immorality” and went after \*”strange flesh.” 6. What else defines their characters and the resulting behaviors? - They “*defile the flesh, reject authority, and speak evil of dignitaries.”* (We will exegete these words below.) ##### **NOTE: Ignorant People *Falsely* *Interpret* Bible Verses. But True Disciples *Accurately Exegete*Bible Verses** 1. On points 1 & 2: God condemned people who were “saved” by Him, and yet *later* became *unbelievers* (i.e. those who gave up faith in His promises of salvation). 2. On point 3: The “angels,” to which this passage refers, had sexual relations with “the daughters of men” (Cf. Genesis 6; 2 Peter 2:4-10). 3. On point 4: “Other cities,” besides Sodom & Gomorrah, are “suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.” People who claim that “God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah because of homosexuality” are left to explain why God brought “vengeance of eternal fire” on these other cities. To understand why, all they need do is to read this verse in its entirety. 4. On point 5 & 6: Here is where proper exegesis comes in to play: ##### **Exegesis of the Pertinent Words in Jude verses 7** **They Gave Themselves Over to “Sexual Immorality”** As we have repeatedly stressed in other pages referring to the so-called “clobber passages,” there is *no* word for “sexual” in any of them, including this one. The word “sexual” in this passage is interpolated into the translations by association. As in the other verses, the translators *decided* (based on context or prejudice) that there is a sexual association, connecting it to the word that usually follows: (πορνεία *porneia*), translated “immorality.” However, in this passage, the words translated “sexual” and “immorality” are more specific than in other passages. Rather than using the usual root πορνεία *porneia*, Jude uses the root compound word ἐκπορνεύω *ekporneuō*, consisting of “ek” (out from, out of, etc. where we get our word “exit”) and πορνεύω *porneuō*, which in other parts of scripture refers to prostitution: “to prostitute one’s body to the lust of another” (Strong’s Dictionary) and also, “to be given to idolatry, to worship idols, to permit one’s self to be drawn away by another into idolatry” (ibid). ἐκπορνεύω ekporneuō, literally translated, means that they were “out-prostitutes,” who were temple cult prostitutes engaged in sexual debauchery associated with idol worship. There is much extant literature to support the fact that this was the socio-religious reality of paganism from recorded ancient times to western civilization in Rome and Corinth. NOW HERE IS AN EXEGETICAL JACKPOT FOR US. Here, Jude is telling us, quite plainly, what most thinking, learned, exegetes already know: The reference to “sexual immorality” in Sodom & Gomorrah and in Paul’s day, as referred to in 1 Corinthians 6, is *prostitution in the context of idol worship*. ##### **Celestial & Terrestrial Bodies**: **They Gave Themselves Over to “Srange Flesh”** Ignorant people who want to believe that this passage condemns people with same-sex attraction have said that those who “*have* *given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh*” in this passage are men who have acted in a sexually “strange” manner by “going after” other men as a form of “sexual immorality.” Now here is a real kicker! The Greek word in this passage for “strange” is ἕτερος *heteros*, which means “another,” “other,” or “different,” (where we get the word *hetero*-sexual!), as opposed to *homo*-sexual, derived from the Greek word ὁμός *homos*, meaning “same.” So the literal translation of a verse that people use to condemn people with same-sex attraction actually, literally translates to “other” flesh, or “another” flesh, or “different” sex. So is you want to put the word “sexual” there, what the verse could actually be condemning is “hetero” sexuality! ##### **A Different King of Flesh** What this verse is actually talking about when it says “strange flesh” is a “different” flesh than is normally human. Reading this passage in context, one sees that the “strange flesh” herein referred to is that of the angels, who were of a different “hetero” type of flesh. Listen to what the Apostle Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15:39-40: > 39 “*All flesh is not the same flesh, but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of animals, another of fish, and another of birds. > 40 “There are also celestial bodies and terrestrial bodies; but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another.*” (1 Corinthians 15:39-40, NKJV) The Apostle Paul tells us that there are celestial (heavenly) bodies and terrestrial (earthly) bodies; but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is *another*. And do you know what Greek word the Apostle used here to describe the fact that there is a *difference* between the celestial and terrestrial bodies? The word he used is “another.” > “The glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is *another*.” (1 Corinthian 15:30) Now, do you know what Greek word Paul uses to point out this difference between the terrestrial body — “another” type of body? **Correct! It is ἕτερος *heteros* (hetero-!)** - Jude uses this Greek word ἕτερος *heteros* to say that depraved men “went after strange (*heteros*) flesh. - Paul uses this same Greek word ἕτερος *heteros* to tell us that the bodies of celestial (heavenly) beings are ἕτερος *heteros* (i.e. different, strange to the other) than terrestrial (earthly) beings. The same Greek word! So, when Jude tells us that those people in Sodom, Gomorrah, and “other cities” “went after strange flesh,” he is telling us that those fallen angels wanted to have sex with earthly bodies, and debauched people with earthy bodies wanted to have sex with beings who possessed heavenly bodies. **Who, then, did *“the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house”* (Genesis 19:4b) go after?** Correct! They went after… ANGELS! The two men that all those “men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young…surrounded the house” to gang-rape ANGELS. *“Now the two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. Genesis 19:1 (NKJV) When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground.”*(Genesis 19:1) ##### **The two men that those “Sodomites” “went after” had CELESTIAL BODIES. They were ANGELS.** - They were NOT men who were looking for a life partner as all gay people, deep in their hearts, are hoping to find. - They were NOT two men or two women who have lived together for decades, have joint bank accounts, have built a home together with a picket fence, a flower bed, and two dogs in the yard. - They were NOT two men who have stayed at each other’s bedsides in the hospital when one or the other was ill or dying. Just as the angels left their “own position” (NKJV: “proper domain”, Cf Genesis 6:14) and performed sexual acts with humans, “in the SAME MANNER,” humans in Sodom perversely left their “own position” to forcefully perform sexual acts upon heavenly angels. The “Sodomites” whom Paul and Jude were referring to were *gangs* of sexually perverted, spiritually backslidden, apostates who, “although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God” (Romans 1:21). > *“And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them” (Romans 1:28-32).* > *“Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who judge, for in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself”* (Romans 2:1) ##### **Exegesis of “They Defile the Flesh, Reject Authority, and Speak Evil of Dignitaries” (Jude 8)** Let me begin by saying that I am one who prefers the New King James Version (NKJV) of the Holy Bible. There are several reasons, for which I will not go into detail at this time. However, in the case of Jude verse 8, other translations are a bit more helpful. - “Likewise also these dreamers defile the flesh, reject authority, and speak evil of dignitaries.” (New King James Version, NKJV) - “Yet in like manner these people also, relying on their dreams, defile the flesh, reject authority, and *blaspheme the glorious ones*.” (English Standard Version, ESV) - “Yet in the same way these men, also by dreaming, defile the flesh, and reject authority, and *revile angelic majesties*.” (New American Standard Bible, NASB) - “Yet in the same way these dreamers also defile the flesh, reject authority, and *slander the glorious ones*.” (New Revised Standard Version, NRSV) - “In the very same way, on the strength of their dreams these ungodly people pollute their own bodies, reject authority and *heap abuse on celestial beings*.” (New International Version (NIV) ##### **Exegesis of Important Words** - \*”defile the \*flesh, (Greek: “defile” = μιαίνω *miainō*: to dye a fabric or to stain; Greek “flesh” σάρξ *sarx*: the literal flesh of a person’s body, or symbolically, the sensuous nature of a human being, with and without reference to sin and depravity.) - reject \*authority, (Greek: κυριότης kyriotēs: lordship or government) - speak \*evil of \*dignitaries, (Greek “evil” = βλασφημέω blasphēmeō: to blaspheme; “dignitaries” (Greek: δόξα doxa: “glories’ or “glorious ones”) So, the people whom Jude is describing — the ones of Sodom and other cities surrounding them — defiled their flesh within the context of “speaking evil of dignitaries” (NKJV); “blaspheming the glorious ones” (ESV); “reviling angelic majesties” (NASB); “slandering the glorious ones” (NRSV); “heaping abuse on celestial beings” (NIV) In no way whatsoever is Jude referring to people with same-sex attraction who love the Lord and would not dare to blaspheme any heavenly being. ##### **For My Friends with Opposite-Sex Attraction Who Have Condemned People with Sam-Sex Attraction:** “Therefore, you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who judge” the eternal souls of people with same-sex attraction, including those who are in loving, caring, relationships. If you did it before when you were ignorant, you are excused. But now, having read this page, you have no more cloak for your sin of judging others. When you have come to Jesus for forgiveness of your sins and you daily seek to serve Him, you are walking “according to the Spirit,” for, *“no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.”* (1 Corinthians 12:3) Finally, whoever you are, Jesus cheerfully forgives you, and you must forgive those who’ve hurt you for being who you are. It is true that when the perpetrators approached Lot’s house to abuse the heavenly beings (angels), they are all called “men” (Hebrew: *’îyš*), which refers to a man or a husband. Chapter 19, verses 4 and 5, state: > Genesis 19:4-5 (NKJV) > 4 “Now before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, *all the people from every quarter*, surrounded the house. (Italics added for emphasis.) > 5 “And they called to Lot and said to him, ‘Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may know them *carnally*.’” (The NKJV inserts with italics the word “carnally” for clarification. It is not in the original text.) **For those who prefer versions other than the New King James Version (NKJV):** The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) translates verse 4 this way: “But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both young and old, *all the people to the last man*, surrounded the house;” (Italics added.) The New American Standard Bible (NASB) translates verse 4: “the men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, both young and old, *all the people from every quarter;*“ ##### **An Example of a Modern Bible Version Problem** The New International Version (NIV) translates verse 4: “Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom —both young and old—surrounded the house.” Take note! The NIV *paraphrases* the original text WRONGLY! This is because it is not a truly accurate word-for-word translation. It is a hybrid. It combines translation with paraphrase. And in many cases it paraphrases verses INACCURATELY. This causes the reader to miss out on some very important details! Did you notice that a very important word was omitted in the NIV? The Hebrew word *‘am*, translated “people” found in literally translated versions is MISSING! This leaves one with the impression that *these* *men* were the *only* ones who resided in Sodom. The NKJV accurately includes “all the people” in addition to “the men of the city.” So do the NRSV and the NASB quoted above. The NIV *omits* this important detail in the original Hebrew. (Guess which version is preferred by most contemporary fundamentalists and evangelicals. That’s right! The NIV. (To be fair, the translators of the NKJV and NASB also get it wrong with regard to the term “homosexuals.”) Why is it so important to include the words, “all the people,” and why is it so wrong for the NIV to omit them? Because the Bible uses the word “men” as an inclusive. “All men” can mean “all people.” For instance: 1 Timothy 2:1-5 (NKJV) 1 Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, 2 for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus…” ##### **And What About the Women?** From this passage we see that: 1. Supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men. (But we need not pray for women?) 2. God our Savior “desires all men to be saved.” (But He does not desire women to be saved?) 3. There is one Mediator between God and men…” (Then, who is the mediator between God and women?) In the Bible, “all men” means “all people.” So when we are told, “the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, *all the people from every quarter*, surrounded the house” (Genesis 19:4), we are being told that a raging mob surrounded the house, without specifying exactly what gender they were. ##### **Now, Here’s a Deal Breaker!** In *over 40 references* to Sodom in the Scriptures, *not one of these* makes specific reference to “homosexuality!” If “homosexuality” was the “sin of Sodom,” you would think that there would be at least one! In Ezekiel 16:49-50, *God told us the real reason* Sodom was destroyed! Ezekiel 16:49, 50 (NKJV) 49 Look, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: She and her daughter had pride, fullness of food, and abundance of idleness; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. 50 And they were haughty and committed abomination before Me; therefore I took them away as I saw fit. The “abomination” they committed was idolatry: they “worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator” (Romans 1:25). **Dear judging and condemning friend, What part of the Prophet Ezekiel’s explanation don’t you understand? Here was his perfect opportunity to blame “homosexuality” for the destruction of Sodom and he blew it!** The “men of Sodom” had stooped down to the lowest level of debauchery. So much so that they were determined to gang rape *angels* — *heavenly spiritual beings* who had taken on human flesh in order to communicate and eat food with Abraham. This is the *real* reason Sodom was destroyed. The story of Sodom and Gomorrah is *not* about “same-sex couples.” The Biblical narrative about Sodom and Gomorrah *in no way* refers to people with same-sex attraction. It does not refer to people who live in loving, caring, and committed relationships with their same-sex spouses. In no way does it refer to one who prepares chicken soup for a same-sex partner who has the flu. The Bible describes Sodom and Gomorrah as a city of such spiritual decay that its destruction was irreversible. Not even 10 righteous *citizens* could be found within it. It was populated by spiritually reprobate *people* whose consciences were seared. The people were filled with “pride, fullness of food, and abundance of idleness. Neither did they strengthen the hand of the poor and needy (Ezekiel 16:49). In such a state of spiritual ruin, they were not above committing the gang rape of angels! ##### **The Lord Jesus’ Opinion on Sodom** Fundamentalists never tell you that Jesus declared a city in His own generation more hopeless than was Sodom! Matthew 11:23-24 (NKJV) “And you, Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, will be brought down to Hades; for if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. But I say to you that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for you.” This is a profound declaration of the Lord! If He had performed His marvelous works there, “those Sodomites” would have been receptive to the gospel! Capernaum was a city that was so respected by people that it was “exalted to heaven.” Capernaum saw first hand the “mighty works” of the Holy Spirit through Jesus’ hands. But because of its outright rejection of the gospel, Capernaum would be brought down to Hell. Now, here’s the shocker! Jesus said, “It shall be *more tolerable* for Sodom in the day of judgment than for you.” It’s impossible for us to fully comprehend and describe what the judgment of God upon the earth will look like. But this declaration of the Lord Jesus completely fits what the Apostle Paul was trying to tell us: Those who lived in Sodom were guilty of rejecting the Truth. As a consequence, they came to *hate* the living God. Instead, they turned to worshiping images of men and animals (Romans 1:23, 30). This is why God “game them up and gave them over” to do a plethora of despicable things. Entering into a loving, caring same-sex relationship was not one of them. ##### **A Word to the Unwise** *After reading the above, do you still intend to sit as judge? In Jesus’ Name, STOP forcing the meaning of the story of Sodom and Gomorrah to mean what it does not! You now have the truth. If you still can’t resist the temptation, at least go back and read the site dedication. Hopefully, after reading it, the Lord will give you another chance to repent of the sin of playing God. He is the only judge of eternal souls. If not, God will hold you responsible if that precious soul resorts to drugs, excessive alcohol use, or suicide as a result of your condemnation. Let’s set the story “straight” right now! This chapter tells us in no uncertain terms that God promised Abraham He would *not* destroy the city if there were at least 10 righteous *people* living within its city limits. You will see below the ultimately condemned are an implied unrighteous *people* or implied unrighteous *ones*. It only specifies the number of “righteous” (without a noun) who, if present, would prevent disaster. It says neither righteous “men” nor righteous “women.” Gender is not specified in Abraham’s discourse with God! In each case, Abraham asked God if He would relent in destroying the city if an incrementally decreasing number of “righteous” could be found. We will see that “homosexuality” was *not* why Sodom & Gomorrah were destroyed. > Genesis 18:23-33 (NKJV) > 23 And Abraham came near and said, “Would You also destroy the righteous with the wicked? > 24 Suppose there were fifty righteous within the city; would You also destroy the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous that were in it? > 25 Far be it from You to do such a thing as this, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be as the wicked; far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?” > 26 So the LORD said, “If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.” > 27 Then Abraham answered and said, “Indeed now, I who am but dust and ashes have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord: > 28 Suppose there were five less than the fifty righteous; would You destroy all of the city for lack of five?” So He said, “If I find there forty-five, I will not destroy it.” > 29 And he spoke to Him yet again and said, “Suppose there should be forty found there?” So He said, “I will not do it for the sake of forty.” > 30 Then he said, “Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak: Suppose thirty should be found there?” So He said, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.” > 31 And he said, “Indeed now, I have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord: Suppose twenty should be found there?” So He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of twenty.” > 32 Then he said, “Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak but once more: Suppose ten should be found there?” > And He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of ten.” > 33 So the LORD went His way as soon as He had finished speaking with Abraham; and Abraham returned to his place. ##### **Not One Woman in Sodom?** Abraham repeatedly refers to the “righteous.” In Scripture, persons referred to only by an adjective without a corresponding noun (“the righteous”) refers to *any* righteous person, without regard to gender. Even less descriptive, Abraham eventually drops the use of “righteous” altogether. He refers only to the number of (righteous) people with no other descriptor. Abraham pleaded: “Suppose fifty…forty-five…forty…thirty…twenty…ten should be found there?” The LORD replied, “I will not destroy it for the sake of ten.” Genesis 18:32 (NKJV) God destroyed the city. This proves that *not even* 10 righteous persons, whether male *or* female, resided in Sodom! Sodom obviously had married couples in male-female relationships who raised families. To presume that every single one of its inhabitants were “homosexuals”\* without even 10 righteous “heterosexuals” is absurd. There is an old, worn-out joke about people who believe that the Holy Spirit will reveal His will to us in the following manner: With eyes closed, - Allow the Bible to fall open to a place that God has chosen. - Let the pointer finger drop down on the page to the verse which God has chosen. - Repeat this procedure twice to ensure confirmation. One day, a sincere, but gullible, believer decided to find God’s will in a certain matter by following this procedure. - First his finger fell on Matthew 27:5, where it says, Judas “went and hanged himself.” - When his finger fell on the second chapter and verse, (by the Spirit’s “direction,” of course!) it fell on Luke 10:37, where it said, *“GO, AND DO LIKEWISE.”* God has spoken, and he must obey! If ever there was a situation where self-righteous people do such an inane thing as this — to the psychological and spiritual detriment of others — it is the way in which they interpret Romans 1:18-32. Before expounding upon this passage, let’s make one thing perfectly clear: ##### **NO ONE WHO BELIEVES IN THE DEATH, BURIAL, AND BODILY RESURRECTION OF THE LORD JESUS WILL *EVER* GO TO HELL — EVER.** Did Jesus lie when He said, “WHOEVER believes in Me shall NOT perish.”? (John 3:16) Did He lie when He said, “the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.”? (John 6:37) Did the Apostle Paul give false hope when he proclaimed, > “if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you *will* be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, “*Whoever* believes on Him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to *all* who call upon Him. For “*whoever* calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.” (Romans 10:9-13) Was Paul just talking about Jews and Greeks when he said, “WHOEVER believes on Him…”? If he was, then if you are not Jewish or Greek, you cannot be saved. Was the Prophet Joel giving false hope when he declared that the Messiah WILL come. And when He does, “it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”? (Joel 2:32) Was the Apostle Peter bearing false witness when he repeated this prophecy of Joel have been fulfilled in Jesus Christ? (Acts 2:21) ##### **WHOSOEVER MEANS WHOSOEVER** These “WHOSOEVER” promises can never be repeated too many times. They are the hope of every human being and every sinner, which we all are. Now, to Romans 1:18-32 — the “pick and choose” passage that’s been taken COMPLETELY out of context! If someone asks you, “Please describe your girlfriend/boyfriend/husband/wife/mother/father/sister/brother, do you only report one single characteristic? Do you *only* say, “She has blond hair.” Of course, the one who just asked you to describe that person will respond with, “And…????” It would be ridiculous to describe the person in such an inadequate way! And yet, that’s exactly the utterly inadequate way prejudiced, bigoted people choose to describe the persons characterized by Paul in Romans chapter 1. Paul gave a very *comprehensive* *LIST* of the attitudes and actions of the people whose behaviors he condemned. This list forms an *aggregate* description of these people. Aggregate means the *whole* that is formed by combining the typical (often disparate) elements. If you fail to include all of these elements, you are failing to describe the WHOLE person, community, etc., whether positive or negative. You are leaving pertinent things out! And when you do this, you are deliberately leaving the questioner with a *FALSE* impression. **This is what people do when they use Romans 1 to cast blanket condemnation on people with same-sex attraction, *including* those in loving, caring same-sex relationships.** ##### **Look at the List!** So, how did Paul describe these people when he gave a comprehensive list of their attitudes, their behaviors, their beliefs, their CORRUPTED theology? To WHOM has the wrath of God been revealed? (Romans 1:18, NKJV) **Paul’s Description of These People** ##### **THOSE who SUPPRESS THE TRUTH.** The “Truth” is “what may be known of God” (Romans 1:19). The “Truth” is Jesus Christ Himself (John 14:6). ##### **THOSE who “KNEW GOD” (Romans 1:21).** And ALTHOUGH, at one time they “knew God,” (had full knowledge of Him), they DID NOT GLORIFY Him as God. ##### **THOSE who were “NOT THANKFUL” (Romans 1:21).** They were ingrates. For all that God had shown them and given them, they gave God no thanks. ##### **THOSE who “CHANGED THE GLORY of the incorruptible God INTO an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things” (Romans 1:23).** They became pagan idol worshipers of nature. They worshiped images of birds, animals, and reptiles. These are the things they changed the glory of God into! God is “incorruptible.” They changed that “incorruptible glory” into creatures and images of creatures that would eventually die and decay. ##### **THOSE who “EXCHANGED the truth of God for the lie” (Romans 1:25).** Many people today — gay and not gay — are doing this today. At one time in their lives, they worshipped and prayed to the One, True, LIVING God. But now, they NO LONGER pray to the pray to the LIVING God. Instead, they “put their thoughts out” to the utterly material “universe.” (Notice, I did not capitalize “universe.”) Somebody convinced them that the material atoms of the universe (much like the ones of that chair you’re sitting on) have power to change their life situations. In short, they have “exchanged the truth of God for the lie.” Thus, they became… **THOSE who “WORSHIPED AND SERVED THE CREATURE rather than the Creator” (Romans 1:25b, NKJV).** Having once known and worshiped the LIVING God, they became idolatrous Pagan nature worshippers. They became worshipers of THINGS. Worshippers of THINGS that would eventually die and decompose. THINGS that would eventually rot. **None of the Descriptions in Paul’s List Can be Ignored.** Not one single element of these people’s dispositions and behaviors can be ignored. The people whom Paul described must be seen for who and what they were: Apostate idol worshippers. ##### **“THEREFORE…” & “FOR THIS REASON…”: THE *RESULT* OF THEIR FOOLISH CHOICE** 24 *“**Therefore** God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. 26 **For this reason** God gave them up to vile passions…”* Romans 1:24-26 (NKJV) People do not *choose* to be gay. Who would? Who would *choose* to look for a same-sex life-partner with all its social stigma, when it would be easy just to find an opposite-sex life partner that friends, family, and the world would affirm, honor, and celebrate? What person would *choose* to be constantly fearful of being beaten up, emotionally and physically, when they could live an easy-peasy, convenient life of social conformity? What type of person would *choose*to lose the fellowship of the church family they grew up with? (One of the saddest statements I’ve ever heard from a young gay person was, “I am hated and condemned to Hell by the same pastor who baptized me in water.”) What a horrible experience to *choose*! ##### **But People Can, and Do, Choose Something Else** “Choose for yourself this day whom you will serve…” (Joshua 24:15, NKJV) In this passage, here again, we see what the choice is. Joshua asked, “Do you choose to serve the pagan gods, or do you choose to serve the LORD?” Every person who has heard the gospel of Jesus Christ must reply to Joshua’s question. And we must all answer it as he did: “But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” (Joshua 24:15, NKJV) ##### **THIS CHOICE, is what determines our eternal destiny — not one’s sexual constitution.** Innate sexual attraction, and the freewill choice to abstain from it or build a mutually loving and caring relationship upon it, does NOT determine one’s eternal destiny. Now, let’s get back to Romans 1:21-26, where we examine the “Therefore…” and the “For this cause…” ##### **“BECAUSE…THEREFORE…FOR THIS REASON…”** 21 **because**, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things. 24 **Therefore** God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. 26 **For this reason** God gave them up to vile passions.. Romans 1:21-26 (NKJV) “**BECAUSE**” although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God (choosing rather to worship images of men, birds, four-footed animals, and creeping things), **“THERFORE”** God also gave them up to uncleanness…to dishonor their bodies among themselves…**“FOR THIS REASON”** God gave them up to vile passions. ##### **What the Apostle Paul Saw When He Looked Out His Apartment Window** Paul saw total and absolute hedonistic debauchery, all within the context of pagan idol worship. Temple cult prostitution was what he was referring to. (Critics, please do your homework regarding temple cult prostitution, which involved both opposite-sex and same-sex rampant orgies in Rome and Corinth at the time of Paul’s existence.) In no way was he referring to the two (married) guys or two (married) women who were forced to keep their love concealed. (An interesting possibility of this scenario may be found when considering the relationship between Jonathan and David in 2 Samuel 1:26): “I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan; You have been very pleasant to me; Your love to me was wonderful, Surpassing the love of women.” 2 Samuel 1:26 (NKJV) **Figure that one out!** The fact is that, Paul is telling us that BECAUSE of their *choice* to worship images of man and beast, “ALTHOUGH THEY KNEW GOD,” God “gave them up” to dishonor their bodies — both “heterosexually” and “homosexually” in pagan worship. ##### **How Do We Come to This Conclusion? It’s All in the Words “EXCHANGED” and ABANDONED!”** Paul tells us what these people did *before* they “EXCHANGED the truth of God for the lie.” It happened in steps: 1. They “EXCHANGED the truth of God for the lie” (Romans 1:25, NASB). 2. Their women EXCHANGED the natural use for what was against \[their\] nature (Romans 1:26, NASB) 3. In the same way also the men ABANDONED the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another (Romans 1:27, NASB) These were not people with innate same-sex attraction. They were people whom God had given up and given over to degrading passions. He gave them up and gave them over to such degrading passions due to their choice to ABANDON Him. The result was that they EXCHANGED and ABANDONED what was had been natural for *them*. As we have seen so clearly, the interpretation of Romans chapter 1 has been completely in error. ##### **And So Has Been Paul’s Purpose for Writing It!** Why did Paul write all those things in chapter 1 of the Letter to the Romans? The answer is found in chapter 2:1-4. 1 Therefore you have no excuse, everyone of you who passes judgment, for in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. 2 And we know that the judgment of God rightly falls upon those who practice such things. 3 But do you suppose this, O man, when you pass judgment on those who practice such things and do the same yourself, that you will escape the judgment of God? 4 Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance? (Romans 2:1-4, NASB) Imagine that! All those horrible things the Apostle wrote about in chapter 1, many of the people to whom he was addressing the letter were doing the very same things! And they were judging others for doing them!!! ##### **What Causes a Problem in Much of Biblical Interpretation** True scholars of the Bible know that it wasn’t until approximately the 14th century that the Holy Bible was divided into chapters and verses. This has caused a multitude of problems, leading to horrendous misinterpretation, false doctrine, and erroneous judgment. Most ignorant Bible readers who misinterpret Romans 1 read that chapter on one particular day, and don’t get to chapter 2 until the next day, or many days after. When they start reading chapter 2, they have completely missed the connection between the first verse of *that* chapter, and all the verses they read the a day or days before in chapter 1. If there were no break whatsoever between Romans 1:32 and Romans 2:1, the continuity of the Apostle Paul’s thought would be much more intact. Romans chapter 1 was NOT written to condemn people with same-sex attraction. An accurate reading of Romans chapter 2 makes it clear that Romans 1 was written with the ultimate intent to rebuke those who were judging the people described in chapter 1, while at the same time, they were doing the very same things! **Do you know self-righteous people like that? They publicly judge and condemn others while they themselves are on the down-low! I’ve met more than a few along the way!** Tragically, these hypocrites have successfully made themselves gatekeepers of the Kingdom of God, and have the damaged the faith of multitudes of people with same-sex attraction. Don’t you be one of them! Ignore them and come back to Jesus! If we believe the Bible’s Truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ and strive our best to follow its precepts, we will be set for life. Admittedly, what I *am* attempting to do is to tamper with *their* interpretation of Scripture! ##### **To Stop Misinterpreting the Holy Bible, The ORIGINAL LANGUAGES Must Be Taken Into Account** Many people have drawn faulty conclusions due to ignorance of the Bible’s *original* languages of Hebrew and Greek. For instance, one evening, a dear friend and I were talking about God, the Bible, etc. in her car. When I told her that in the Koine Greek (the original language of the New Testament) there is absolutely no translatable equivalent to “homosexual,” her head dropped to the steering wheel, and she said, “That’s the trouble with you intellectuals. You cause people to be confused with all that Hebrew and Greek.” (!) This would be hilarious if it weren’t so tragic. When it comes to ignorance, one person’s bliss can be another person’s spiritual demise. ##### **To Put a Stop to Misinterpreting the Holy Bible, IDIOM Must be Taken Into Account** Question for my brothers who are not gay: Did Jesus really call you an adulterer and intend for you to pluck out your eyeball and throw it away when you, even for a split-second, check out a good-looking woman walking by who isn’t your wife or girlfriend? (Cf. Matt. 5:28-29). Here’s another classic Bible idiom: “If anyone comes to me and does not *hate* his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters – yes, even his own life – he cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:26). For the critics reading this site right now, do you think yourself a true disciple of Jesus? No, you are not! You haven’t yet decided to “hate” your loved-ones! Now, of course you will say, “That’s not to be taken literally.” Ahh, you are smarter than I thought! So there you have it. As a literary technique for emphasis, the Bible often uses *hyperbolic idiom*. Hence, to “hate,” by comparison, means to *prefer the other* above and beyond it. You already knew that without my telling you. But the minute you insisted this verse not to be taken literally, you did just what you accuse me of doing: You re-interpreted the literal words of Jesus. What gives *you* the right to do that, but not me? ##### **To Stop Misinterpreting the Holy Bible, CULTURE Must Be Taken Into Account** Read 1 Corinthians 11:14. Here, the Apostle Paul tells us that “*nature itself*” teaches us that it is “a shame” for a man to have long hair. How can that be? “Nature itself” causes a man’s hair to grow every bit as long as a woman’s! Obviously, Paul’s concept of “nature” was what was culturally “normal” in his day. Therefore, when quoting from the Bible, *one should* *think twice* before telling a person, “Your same-sex relationship is ‘against nature.’” (And, brother, if you’re not willing to do this, make sure you keep your hair nice and short!) ##### **To Stop Misinterpreting the Holy Bible, CONTEXT Must Be Taken Into Account** Some people have caused great havoc by *taking the Bible out of context*: Did you hear about the dear man who decided to let his finger be “led by the Spirit” and fall on a couple verses to hear what message God had for him that day? The first verse his finger happened upon was Matthew 27:5, where Judas went away and hanged himself. The second verse his finger fell upon was Luke 10:37, where Jesus said, “Go and do likewise.” **People do the same thing with Genesis 19 and the story of the destruction of Sodom. Interesting how, being convinced they are always “led by the Spirit” in their Bible interpretation, their proverbial spiritual fingers never fall on the verse that distinctly states that this was a situation of egregiously violent gang-rape. Instead, they interpolate their prejudice into the narrative by demanding that this story serves to condemn Jesus-loving gay people who love their church family and who love and cherish their life partners. It’s “not of yourselves.” 8. “It is the GIFT (Greek: χάρισμα *charisma* – ‘free gift’) OF GOD.” **Not a Single Thing More!** One of the most popular hymns the world has ever known is “Amazing Grace.” So, what’s so amazing about God’s mercy and grace? **Is it amazing or not?** The attitudes and behaviors of many who sing the song would make one wonder. God’s *mercy* and God’s *grace* have to do with what God *doesn’t* give us, and what God *does* give us, respectively. ##### **God’s Mercy** **The meaning of God’s mercy is that, the consequences He *should* give us, He doesn’t.** Because we “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23) — in our thoughts, our words, and our deeds — we deserve judgment and condemnation. BUT, because of God’s MERCY, **He doesn’t give us what we rightfully deserve.** ##### **God’s Grace** **Conversely, God’s grace has to do what He *shouldn’t* give us, but He does.** We cannot help ourselves. As the old saying goes, “We cannot lift ourselves up by our own bootstraps.” Hard as we may try, no amount of effort on our part can possibly remove the sins that we daily commit in our thoughts, words, and deeds. This is where God’s GRACE comes in! By His excellent grace, **He *freely* *gives* us the favor we *do not* deserve.** So do you see? God’s *MERCY* is when He *withholds the consequences* of sin that we *should* experience. His *GRACE* is when He *doles out the favor* that we *do not deserve* to experience. ##### **Bible-Quoting Critics Beware!** You, like everyone else, have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Like everyone else, YOU deserve the consequences of your sin. And just like the rest of us, you *do not* deserve the favor of God. You deserved divine judgement, but you didn’t get it, because of the MERCY of God. And yet, because His only begotten Son paid the full price for your sins, He gave you His love, mercy, and grace by your simply asking for it! You didn’t deserve favor, but God freely bestowed in upon you, because of the GRACE of God! The Lord Jesus Christ gave you His free gift of salvation (Romans 6:23). He gives it to ALL who believe (Romans 3:22; Galatians 3:22). > **“Therefore, you have no excuse, whoever you are, when you judge others; for in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, are doing the very same things.” Romans 2:1 (NKJV)** Therefore, YOU have no right to judge and condemn a person with same-sex attraction who believes that Jesus Christ is his or her personal Savior. You have no right whatsoever. **Jesus has spoken, now listen!** > “Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven” (Luke 6:37, NKJV). > He has “raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. **For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,** not of works, lest anyone should boast.” (Ephesians 2:6-9) ##### Let all start singing to the LORD, “You Raise Me Up!” So then, my sisters and brothers with same-sex attraction, don’t let the self-appointed gatekeepers of God’s Kingdom stand in your way! Come back to Jesus! Come BOLDLY before His throne of grace. Like the rest of us “sinners” in the world, you also will see “the exceeding riches of His grace!” If you understand the grace of God in Christ Jesus according to God’s Plan of Salvation laid out in Scripture, you will rest assured that, aside from faith in Christ’s finished work on the Cross, there is nothing, NO-THING!, more required to gain God’s favor toward salvation. Anyone who tells you anything different has no understanding of God’s *simple* Plan of Salvation. The street preacher with his bullhorn, his sign on a stick, his sandwich board, or his business cards listing “Who will go to Heaven” on one side, and “Who will go to Hell” on the other side, will not get to stand before God, pat himself on the back, and foolishly say, “What a good boy was I.” - God will ask the “gay” and “straight” person the same question: “What in your heart did you do with My Son, Jesus?” - The gay person who loved Jesus while on earth will say, “I loved Him because He first loved Me” (1 John 4:19). - God will say, “Enter into the joy of your LORD.” - The gay person will say, “But LORD, they told me…” - God will say words to the effect, “You were covered with the same blood of My Son, Jesus, as they were.” That is why we can confidently proclaim, there is Grace4Gays! 1.
